It was Ramadan and I wanted to eat watermelon but the shops were selling them whole and I had no fridge. There was no way I could eat 10 kilos of watermelon, even if I was allowed to. But with 15 hours fasting each day there were not enough eating hours left to manage it.
I asked my friends and neighbours where I could buy a slice of watermelon. They all told me it was impossible.
My mind took me back to the streets of Kathmandu in Nepal where I could get a slice for 10 rupees. I could not accept that watermelon was only sold whole in Morocco. They were huge!
One day I set off to the fancy supermarket at Marjane Shopping Mall. As I arrived I realised it was Saturday and half of the population of Casablanca was window-shopping there. I groaned in dismay. I detest big crowds in shops!
But the possibility of watermelon slices drove me to enter the over-crowded mall.
The supermarket was almost impossible to navigate. Shopping carts and baskets blocked the aisles and the noise was merciless too.
I made it to the produce area but the watermelons had been moved! I was not deterred. I was talking to my angels in my head. "I know there are watermelon slices here somewhere!"
Finally I discovered treasure. The slices were large - more chunks than slices but somebody had cut some of the watermelons into pieces!
I grabbed the smallest piece and went to get it weighed. It was 2 kilos of sugary bliss! I was jubilant! My joy levels were so high I could have flown to the moon and back in a second. I was ecstatic!
From that moment on I was able to shimmy around the obstacles in the aisles and my grin lit up the store. It felt easy to collect all the food that I wanted.
I discovered that people wanted to interact with my joyful energy. As I stood in the line to pay for my shopping, the man behind me asked, "You're not fasting?" I told him I was praying AND fasting for Ramadan and we had a delightful conversation.
When it was time to pay for my food the man announced that he would pay for it all! My joy levels exploded to new heights. My 2-kilo watermelon slice and all my groceries were free!
Outside in the street I heard a horn beeping. It was my friend driving by. I could not hold in all the joy so I waved with both arms over my head as if directing an airplane in to land!
And when I got to my hotel even a careless driver could not dampen my spirits as he drove through a puddle and sprayed the dirty water on my clean clothes. As I arrived on the other side of the street more friends stepped forward, eager to talk with me.
Later that evening I shared the watermelon with the staff at my hotel.
That Saturday I was gifted many things - pure joy, watermelon, free groceries, and wonderful interactions with my friends. But the biggest gift of all was the demonstration of the power of joy to attract such blessings into my day.
Never again will I complain about being in a busy shopping mall. Instead I choose to remember that magical Ramadan Saturday when the blessings just kept on coming... Oh, the magical powers of a slice of watermelon!
