In 2012 the universe was determined to get me back to Dharamkot. It was on my mind for weeks. Then I discovered that one of my students was going to that same tiny village to continue her yoga training! A country the size of India... And she would be in my tiny village at the same time as me?! Amazing!
When I arrived at my usual guest house the owner said The Dalai Lama had begun teaching in town. This was a first for me. I had felt his energy in the temple at Tibetan New Year and it was sparkling joy. But I had yet to see him. The guest house owner then added that The Dalai Lama would be teaching again at the end of the month too.
As I waited for my room I opened my suitcase to get something. The first thing I saw was my A4 poster of The Dalai Lama sitting there on top of everything! I had never travelled with it before. Now I took it as a sign that it was finally time to see the man.
The month flew by.
Now I was in the line to have my bags inspected. My security pass was perfect and my bag was too. But my mobile phone had to be left somewhere safe.
Unfortunately there were no signs anywhere to indicate the safe place. So I arrived at the security checkpoint only to find out I now had to go back through the temple grounds to deposit the phone... And then jump the line to security to continue inside the temple.
I was feeling a bit anxious because the start time for the program was very close but I needn't have worried. I finally cleared security and was wandering around trying to follow the new layout when I heard a voice shout,
"Get down! Get down! He's coming!"
Just a few yards ahead of me I saw people all kneeling with heads bowed... And at that moment The Dalai Lama walked out through the gate on my left. I dropped to the ground quickly but when he stopped and turned to wave I stood up and waved back. Pure joy flooded my whole being and tears streamed down my face!
Once he was out of sight we were allowed to enter the temple.
It was packed!
Yet I found a seat in the front row by the main corridor space where he would sometimes walk. After a while I noticed that if I leaned over to my right, I could see him! And when I did lean over to see him he would lean to his left and look straight at me - it was magical!
There were two routes he could use to come and go for this teaching program. People told me that he always alternates his route so more people can see him. I was just grateful to see him at all.
It was possible to listen to translations of his talk using a radio but I opted to just listen to him speaking Tibetan and receive his transmission of energy.
My student friend told me it was possible to leave personal items at the office for blessing from The Dalai Lama so I handed over my little Tibetan Singing Bowl and my Mala Beads.
But there was some definite magic in the air during that program.
My lucky singing bowl has the Astamangala engraved upon it. These 8 lucky symbols from the Tibetan Buddhist belief system must have really been working some magic for me. Or maybe it was the extra blessings from The Dalai Lama himself because I had 8 close encounters with him during that event. Yes, 8 times he walked within 1 metre of me and there was a clear view and eye contact.
It was a very special, blessed time indeed..
Well worth the wait!
